689,746. Rubber-soled footwear. ROLLMAN, E. E., and SZERENYI, A. Feb. 20, 1951 [Feb. 20, 1950], No. 4283/50. Class 17 (ii). [Also in Group V] A sole of sponge rubber is vulcanised in situ to an upper before the upper is formed into its final shape. Distortion of the upper by heat during vulcanization is thereby avoided. The upper may be 'cut, and formed after vulcanization of a piece of upper material to the sole, or it can be cut and partly stitched before vulcanization, and formed into final shape after vulcanization. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the upper is formed by tongues or flaps 3 extending from the edges of a sock lining 2 and connected together around a foot by a lace passed through holes 4, or by an ornamental instep piece. The flaps may be of different material from the sock lining. In an alternative construction, shown in Fig. 4, suitable for upper material 15 with a smooth polished outer surface, the upper, inside-out, is vulcanized to a sponge rubber sole 18 between a relatively flat extension 17 on a last 16 and a frame 20 and bottom plate 19 and is then reverted so that the sponge rubber comes inside the upper.
