781,271. Shoe stiffeners. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 3363/57. Divided out of 781,270. Drawings to Specification. Class 17(2) A shoe toe or counter stiffener comprises a saturable fibrous material such as carded felt, napped or unnapped woven textiles. or paper impregnated with an uncured sulphur-vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber and inert filling particles, and is coated with a layer of active rubber type cement embodying a migratory roomtemperature accelerator adapted to vulcanize the rubber of the impregnant. In a preferred example, a flannel base material is impregnated first with a saturant having a crude natural rubber and then with a saturant having a synthetic butadiene, both saturants including sulphur. Uncured blanks so formed have less tendency to stick together than when natural rubber saturants only are used. The blank so made is stuck by a latex cement including an accelerator to a shoe upper part and the other face and part of the upper is then coated with a naptha-rubber cement also including an accelerator and the shoe lining is thus stuck in position. The two cements effect complete vulcanization of the saturant after a considerable time, during which the stiffener remains limp to allow the shoe to be lasted to shape. Tn some cases either saturant or cement may be used alone.
