A sole comprises a tread layer 1 of straight parallel united fibrous elements of braid or rope of vegetable, animal or mineral fibres connected by a thin layer 3 of adhesive to another layer 2 of united fibrous elements perpendicular to the elements of the first layer. A border 4 of rope on its edge bounds the sole being flush with the tread face, but extending above the other which may be covered with a large mesh cloth. The edge of the tread face is reinforced by a band of rubber 9 which is extended at 10 to reinforce the toe and at 11 to form a heel.
