Abstract

1,248,959. Boots &c. SEAK Ltd. 30 Oct., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 60306/68. Heading A3B. A method of making a shoe includes the steps of making a cast of the foot of the intended wearer of the finished shoe, moulding a bottom part to the underside of this cast, conforming the upper 11 to the upper surface of the cast and bonding the upper 11 to the moulded bottom part. As described a heated insole blank 4 of thermoplastic material e.g. expanded polyethylene, is pressed against the bottom of the cast (not shown) to mould it to the shape of the wearer's foot. The insole is then removed from the cast and a cushion layer 7 of polyurethane foam and a covering 8 of nylon fabric are applied to the insole. Cement is also applied around the side and bottom edge of the insole at 9, 10. The upper 11 which consists of an outer layer 12 of silicone rubber, or cushion layer 13 of polyurethane foam and a lining 14 of nylon fabric is then assembled on the cast so that it assumes the shape of the cast. Cement 15 is applied to the margin of the upper 11 and the insole 4 is replaced on the cast. The cemented margin is then folded under the insole 4 and is bonded to its side and lower surfaces. The shoe is then finished by the addition of an outer sole (not shown) and foxing strip (not shown).
