P. 0. BROWN.
BOOT 0R SHOE. 7 No. 318,949. Patented June 2, 1885.
Un'irnn States Patent PHILIP CHARLES BEOVYN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOOT OR SHOE.
EEPEQIFECATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,929, dated. June 2, 1885.
Application filed August .25, 1884, (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP Gnlinrns BROWN, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots,Shoes, and other Footear; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will on able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a view of a boot provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec tion of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a slight modification of the same, and Figs. 4; and 5 are views of the vulcanized rubber upper and intermediate sole before application.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to boots, shoes, or similar foot-wear in which an additional 2 upper and intermediate sole are applied; and it B indicates the insole; G D, the outer sole and heel. E is the additional outer upper, which is of vulcanized rubber, shaped to fit upon the outside of the leather upper, and F is an intermediate sole of vulcanized rubber, which is secured between the insole and the outer sole.
The rubber upper and sole are attached to the boot or shoe in the following manner: The leather upper is prepared in the usual man ner, and either placed flat upon a board or table before it is attached to the insole, or it is attached to the insole and placed upon a last. The outer upper, which is of soft vulcanized rubber, is now treated upon its inner side with any suitable cement, after having been cutout to fit around the lower portion of the upper with its lower edges flush with the edges of the leather upper, and after having been placed in position upon the leather upper the rubber upper is furthermore secured to the leather upper by the pressure of a heated roller or mold.
\Vhen it is desired to affix the additional sole, the upper is placed upon a last, if it has not been done before affixing the rubber up per, the insole is attached to the upper, where this has not been done before, and the rubber sole is thereupon secured to the insole by means of suitable cement an d a roller or mold, in the same manner in which the rubber upper is secured.
The outer sole and the heel are secured to the upper and insole in the usual manner, being secured over the intermediate sole, where this is used, and the lower edges of the rubber upper are secured in the same manner as the edges of the leather upper, form1ng,v1r'
tually, parts of the leather upper.
It follows that the described intermediate rubber sole may be dispensed with, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the outer sole and heel being secured to the insole and uppers in the usual manner.
I am aware that portions of an upper or an entire upper of unvulcanized rubber, leather, or other material has formerly been secured to boots or shoes, either for ornamental purposes or for the purpose of making the shoe warmer or water-proof; and I do not wish to make broad claims for the principle of affixing additional uppers to boots or shoes; but I have found that the uppers and intermediate soles of vulcanized rubber cemented to the uppers and insoles of shoes or boots before atfixing the outer sole strengthen the shoes or boots and make them impervious to cold or water, and the uppers of vulcanized rubber give the shoes or boots an ornamental appearance; and
I therefore claim 1. The improved method of constructing a boot or shoe, consisting in first preparing the usual leather upper in the usual manner, thereupon attaching a correspondingly shaped upper of soft vulcanized rubber to the leather upper bymeans of a suitable cement, securing the rubber upper by pressing it witha heated roller or mold, and thereupon attaching the outer sole and heel in the usual manner, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
ICO
2. The improved method of constructing a boot or shoe, consisting in first preparing the leather upper and insole in the usual manner upon a last, thereupon attaching a cor respondinglyshaped soft vulcanized rubber upper upon the outside of the leather upper by suitable cement, then securing an intermediate sole of soft vulcanized rubber to the shoe by suitable cement, securing the rubber upper and sole by the pressure of a heated roller or mold, and at last securing the outer sole and heel in the usual manner, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a shoe having the usual leatherupper and sole,
and also having an outer upper of vulcanized rubber secured to the leather upper by means of suitable cement, as and for the purpose- PHILIP CHARLES BROWN.
' Witnesses:
SARAH 0. BROWN, CHARLES BENNS BROWN.
