Abstract

1343397 Injection moulding footwear BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Dec 1969] 60837/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division A3] A method of making a shoe having a built-in foot support, e.g. an arch support, includes the steps of placing a lasted upper/insole assembly U, 20, on a foot form having a recess corresponding to the foot support, the insole 20 having an aperture 22, and moulding a shoe bottom unit on to the upper/insole assembly U, 20, the moulding material flowing through the aperture 22 to form the foot support. As shown the recess in the foot form extends from the arch area, round the heel to the outer side of the shoe. The shoe bottom unit is injection moulded in a mould 40 consisting of a sole mould 42 and movable side moulds 44, the side moulds being provided with two sets of welt plates 52, 54 which are separated by a spacer 56. The lower welt plate 52 engages the shoe around the feather edge and the upper welt plate 54 engages the shoe along the upper edge of the cavity C defined by the recess in the foot form. A suitable material for the moulded bottom unit and foot support is foamed polyurethane.
