Abstract

1,191,832. Boots &c. CLARKS Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 31339/66. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B5] Footwear of the type having the upper formed by straps or bands e.g. sandals or mules, and having a moulded sole has the straps or bands secured to the sole by having their ends embedded in the moulded sole. As described sandals are made by closing a sole mould 10 (Fig. 1) by a flat jig 11 on which are assembled the straps 19, 20, 21, 22 (Fig. 3) which form the upper, the ends of the straps projecting into the mould cavity 10. A sock 17 and heel block 18 may also be assembled on the jig 11. The jig 11 is located on the mould 10 by pins 13 and holes 14 and the mould is filled e.g. by injection, to mould the sole on the upper. Alternatively the mould cavity 10 may be filled with expandable material prior to being closed by the jig 11. The jig 11 may be rigid or may be of flexible material e.g. rubber, in which case a cover plate 12 may be placed over the jig 11. The jig 11 has slots 16 in which the straps are positioned and slits 26 which can be opened out to allow insertion and removal of the straps. In a modification (Fig. 6) the jig 30 is provided with a recess to form a sandal having a platform sole. The recess may have a lining 32 which provides a cover for the platform sole. The lining 32 may be of thermoplastic material which is conformed to the shape of the recess by vacuum moulding or by heat and pressure during the sole moulding operation. In making a mule (not shown) or other footwear in which the straps or bands extend over the foot without any joint, the jig and cover plate are reduced in size in the region of the straps so that they can be placed inside the continuous straps.
