Abstract
1301571 Boots &c E T WRIGHT & CO INC 9 April 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 16890/70 Heading A3B [Also in Division B5] A studded outsole 12 for attachment to a welted shoe, e.g. a golf shoe, has a raised platform 14 on its upper surface which fills the recess 46 in the shoe bottom (normally occupied by a bottom filler) and has studs 16 with their heads 24 (Fig. 6) embedded in the platform 14. The sole is made by compression moulding natural or synthetic rubber in a mould consisting of a side ring 48, a movable bottom plate 50 and a cover plate 52 having a cavity 54 which produces the platform 14. The studs 16 are positioned in holes 56 in the bottom plate 50, the edges of the holes 56 engaging the median portions of conical shoulders 36 on the studs 16. Pins 58 on the cover plate 52 locate and hold the studs 16 with their heads 24 in the cavity 54. A reinforcement, e.g. of coarse fabric or resin impregnated glass fibre fabric, may be incorporated in the platform 14 either around the heads of the studs 16 or on the uppermost surface of the platform 14. The studs 16 are of the shape shown in Fig. 6 and have hardened tips 28. The sole 12 is attached to an insole 42, upper 40, welt 44 assembly by stitching and/or adhesive and may be larger in size than the welt outline to fit a range of sizes, the sole being trimmed to the correct size after it has been attached to the shoe bottom.
