Abstract

932,216. Making boots &c. G. MONDELLO, and T. BOCCOLI. Aug. 11, 1960 [Aug. 11, 1959; Aug. 14, 1959], No. 27884/60. Class 17 (2). [Also in Group V] A process for manufacturing articles of footwear comprises forming a sole having a flange extending laterally from the top edge of the sole, inserting the sole into a mould such that the flange forms a seal between adjacent mould pieces and subsequently moulding the upper on to the sole using a heat-curable material. The sole 18 with the flange 16 is prepared in an auxiliary mould and partly or wholly prevulcanized, though not necessarily pressed to exactly its correct proportions. An inflatable mould core 8 has a rigid plug 4 and a valve 5, and is reinforced at the base with woven fabric with the threads at 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the sole. The core is covered with fabric and/or reinforcing elements-i.e. felted, non-slip rubber-and a heat-curable material. This material has a higher sulphur content than that of the sole so that the diffusion from the upper to the sole ensures a good bond between the two. The sole and core are placed in the mould and the latter is inflated. The upper is heated for about five minutes depending on the materials used &c., or the mould may be preheated. Excess material is expelled from the top of the boot. A welt may be imitated by having corresponding indentations in the base of the upper mould piece. The flange 16 can be removed by machining while the top edge can be cut round to give the correct height or inclination. The upper may be partly formed of non heat-curable material, e.g. heat resistant leather which may have had a special surface treatment. The sole may be thicker at the edge than at the centre. The thickness of the upper may be varied a little, e.g. between 1¢ and 3 mm., by providing cavities in the outer mould pieces. The colour of the sole and upper may be different.
