Abstract

744,149. Boots &c. RO-SEARCH, Inc. May 12, 1953 [May 13, 1952; June 24, 1952], No. 13224/53. Class 17 (2). [Also in Group V] In making footwear having a rubber sole moulded and vulcanized to the upper, a welt 3 is attached to the lower margin of the upper and to a tread sole 6, and the assembly is placed loosely on a metal mould last 1, together with a suitably sized rubber mix 7. A wedge-shaped divided collar 8 is then forced into the crease between the upper and the welt, thus shaping the upper and shoe bottom into conformity with the last. The assembly is then heated to mould and vulcanize the mix 7 which is bonded to the shoe crease and to the inside of the welt, thus stabilizing the shoe bottom. If it is desired to present an exposed rubber edge to the sole, a bottom plate is provided to the mould and the collar is modified to allow the insertion of a rubber strip under the welt, which, during vulcanization flows to cover its edge. In making a platform-soled shoe, Fig. 4, no welt strip is provided, the margin of the upper 2 being extended instead, so that, after a crease has been formed by the collar 22, the upper turns outwards and then at 17 covers the edge of the rubber mix for sole 16, a side plate 18 and bottom plate 21 holding it in position during vulcanization of the sole 16.
