Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A method of making a shoe includes the steps of placing a tread sole 9 in the forepart of a mould 1, placing a prefabricated heel 13 in the heel cavity of the mould 1, coating the marginal portions of the top face of the heel 13 with adhesive, introducing a charge of vulcanizable material 10, 19 over the tread sole 9 and heel 13, closing the mould with a lasted upper 20, 21 and applying heat to promote melting and expansion of the vulcanizable material whereby the sole is moulded and the tread sole and heel are bonded to the lasted upper. A shank stiffener 11, 12 and a filler 112 may be placed above the charge of vulcanizable material before the mould is closed by the lasted upper. The tread sole 9 may be stamped out from a sheet of green or partially vulcanized rubber and the heel may consist of a wooden core 13 covered by a layer of fabric 14 and a top lift 15. The vulcanizable material 10, 19 may be granules of a mixture which forms foamed rubber when subjected to heat or pressure or may be in the form of a suitably sized crude rubber sheet. The mould (Fig. 7) consists of two halves 1, 2 which are hinged together by a link 3 and which are closed and locked by a lever 4. The sole cavity 5 has a sealing lip 6a around its edge and the heel cavity 7 has a flared or funnel shaped edge 8 which contacts the bottom portion of the lasted upper.
