Abstract
Sodium aluminium silicates, defined as the complexes of aluminium oxide, sodium oxide, and silicon oxide obtained by the process of Specification 841,831, which may be homogeneous or contain, in addition particles of silica, having an average particle size of less than 50 millimicrons, and containing 2-30% Al2O3, 65-80% SiO2, 1-5% Na2O, together with 10-15% water that can be driven off on ignition, are prepared by adding a sodium silicate solution and a sodium aluminate solution in that order to a solution of an ammonium salt of a strong acid in the presence of sodium sulphate, the mixture being stirred continuously and its temperature being maintained above 60 DEG C. during the reaction, and thereafter filtering, washing and drying the product. The sodium silicate has a motor ratio Na2O:SiO2 in the range 1:2 to 1:4, and the sodium aluminate has a molar ratio Na2O: Al2O3 in the range 1,3:1 to 3:1. The sodium silicate solution contains 150-220 g.p.l. SiO2, and the sodium aluminate solution contains 50-250 g.p.l. Al2O3. The amount of ammonium salt solution employed is 2-10% in excess of that required to neutralize the sodium silicate and aluminate. The ammonium salt solution is preferably one of 80-130 g.p.l. ammonium chloride, and preferably contains 5-60 g.p.l. sodium sulphate. The product is suitable for use as a rubber filler.ALSO:A rubber mix has the following composition by weight .natural rubber (pale crepe).100 .zinc oxide.1 .stearic acid.1 .Vulcafor FN.1,5 .Vulcafor ZDC.0,5 .benzoic acid.1,25 .triethanolamine.2 .sulphur.2,5 .sodium aluminium silicate.40 .("Vulcafor" is a Registered Trade Mark) The sodium aluminium silicate is prepared by adding solutions of sodium silicate and sodium aluminate in that order to a solution of an ammonium salt of a strong acid in the presence of sodium sulphate. Specification 841,831 is referred to.
