Abstract
A water-base casein, rubber or oil modified alkyd resin paint composition comprises from 0.1 to 7 per cent, by weight, based on the solids content of the paint, of a water-soluble alkali metal salt of a hydrocarbon substituted silane triol calculated as RSiO2M, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and M is an alkali metal. The salt has the formula <FORM:0743685/IV(a)/1> where R may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, hexyl, decyl, phenyl, naphthyl, biphenyl, benzyl, phenylethyl, tolyl or xylyl, and M may be sodium potassium or caesium. The salt may be obtained by hydrolysis of a monohydrocarbon substituted silane containing three hydrolysable radicals such as halogen atoms or alkoxy radicals, with an alkali metal hydroxide. The salt may be incorporated as a dehydrated powder of formula RSiO2M. The salt, specifically sodium methyl siliconate, is added to paints containing (1) casein, hydrated lime, calcium carbonate, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, and titanium dioxide; (2) castor oil-modified glyceryl phthalate alkyd resin, emulsifying agent, titanium dioxide, lithopone, aluminium silicate, mica powder, and diatomaceous silica, (3) butadiene-styrene copolymer, emulsifying agent, titanium dioxide, lithopone, and diatomaceous silica. Specification 621,970 is referred to.ALSO:A water-base casein, rubber or oil modified alkyd resin paint composition comprises from 0.1 to 7 per cent, by weight, based on the solids content of the paint of a water-soluble alkali metal salt of a hydrocarbon substituted silane triol calculated as R Si O2 M where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and M is an alkali metal. The salt has the formula <FORM:0743685/III/1> where R may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, iso-propyl, butyl, hexyl, decyl, phenyl, naphthyl, biphenyl, benzyl, phenylethyl, tolyl, or xylyl, and M may be sodium, potassium or caesium. The salt may be obtained by hydrolysis of a monohydrocarbon substituted silane containing three hydrolyzable radicals such as halogen atoms or alkoxy radicals, with an alkali metal hydroxide. The salt may be incorporated as a dehydrated powder of formula R Si O2 M. The salt, specifically sodium methyl siliconate, is added to paints containing (1) casein, hydrated lime, calcium, carbonate, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, and titanium dioxide, (2) castor oil modified glyceryl phthalate alkyd resin, emulsifying agents, titanium dioxide, lithopone, aluminium silicate, mica powder, and diatomaceous silica, (3) butadiene-styrene copolymer, emulsifying agent, titanium dioxide, lithopone, and diatomaceous silica.
