Abstract
In the preparation of a vulcanized rubber composition a precipitated silicon-containing inorganic filler is incorporated in a rubber mix in a wet state due to contained water, the precipitated filler having been incompletely dried. Preferably the filler is in the form of a wet cake containing 15 to 50 per cent by weight of solids. The wet cake may be added in a mixer or on a mill to a rubber mix containing accelerators and antioxid ants and the temperature of the mix raised above 80 DEG C., preferably between 100 DEG and 120 DEG C., and the mixing continued until the water content of the mass has been reduced by evaporation to 5 to 10 per cent by weight of the filler. The filler is preferably hydrated silica containing 1,5 per cent of sodium sulphate, but may comprise silica coated with another oxide or a hydroxide, or calcium, aluminium, or magnesium silicate.
