Abstract

Coloured fillers for admixture with lime or cement are given a preliminary coating with silicic acid gel to ensure permanence of colour and good binding with the lime &c. The silicic acid may be applied as a dispersion, or by decomposition of water-glass or of siliceous materials such as trass, kieselguhr, lava or slags. Coloured precipitates may be thrown down in presence of the silicic acid. The following examples are described: (1) 1 to 10 parts of silicic acid gel in the form of a dispersion, which may be prepared with the aid of a little starch, casein or glue, is kneaded with 100 parts water and 100 parts of brick-dust (or graphite, ochre, &c.) and dried. (2) Waterglass solution is decomposed with carbon dioxide or other acid, slate-dust, iron oxide &c. is added, and after standing the sodium carbonate &c. is washed out. (3) Trass is kneaded, optionally under heat, with hydrochloric acid to hydrate and partly dissolve its silicic acid; graphite, white china dust &c. is mixed in and the hydrochloric acid evaporated. (4) Trass is treated with sulphuric acid and barium carbonate is added to form barium sulphate (if a white colour is required) or iron oxide is added, the mass in this case being heated to redness (to give a yellowish to red colour) or copper salts (greenish blue). (5) Trass is treated with hydrochloric and chromic acids and carbonate of zinc; cadmium, lead or iron added to give yellow colours.
