540,642. Flame-proofing coating compositions. STRAUSZ, H. J. March 23, 1940, No. 5347. [Class 95] A flame-proof, fire-retarding coating composition consists, apart from any water present, of a preponderating proportion of calcium sulphate in the original hydrated form in which it is precipitated, together with colloidal silica, colloidal alumina and boric acid, which react with the calcium sulphate to produce a glazelike substance under the action of heat. Silicagel may be used as the source of colloidal silica, and aluminium hydroxide as the source of colloidal alumina, or Bentonite may be used as the source of both. Flame-proof salts and inorganic or organic binders may be added, and the composition may be mixed with a washable paste distemper, e.g. one containing casein, glue or saponified oils or fats. In an example, freshly precipitated calcium sulphate is mixed with Bentonite, water, ammonium sulphate, diammonium phosphate, borax and boric acid, and then with a distemper composed of casein, slaked lime, lithopone and water.
