A refractory lined furnace including an arched roof and means for supporting the roof comprises transversely spaced abutments in the furnace, a metal supporting framework, beams extending longitudinally of the furnace in spaced relation to each other, and arched channel-shaped elements extending transversely of the furnace in spaced relation to each other, each of the beams intersecting all of the arched elements and being secured together in fixed position at each intersection, the arched roof comprising refractory bricks extending in longitudinally adjacent transversely extending arched rows between the abutments and having means for rigidly securing transversely adjacent bricks in fixed positions relative to the elements and beams, the roof bricks being securely held in arched position and supported relative to each other by the means. Refractory bricks 4, Fig. 1, of an arched furnace roof which is suspended from a supporting framework 1, 2 by adjustable hangers 3 have metallic top plates 5, Fig. 3, to which are welded rods 8 longitudinal of the furnace to provide a backing for the bricks. Channel-shaped elements 11 which conform to the arched upper surface of the roof are welded at 12 to the rods and have a backing of H-shaped beams 13 welded thereto which are then suitably adjustably mounted in place by the hangers. The edges of the roof rest on spaced abutments 10 on the side walls of the furnace and asbestos spacers 14 may be provided between the bricks. In a modification, Figs. 8 to 10 (not shown), certain shorter bricks are utilized which are held in position only by the pressure of the arched roof and without the rods 8.
