Abstract
887,419. Vertical steam boilers or water heaters. COCHRAN & CO., ANNAN, Ltd. June 8, 1960 [Nov. 9, 1959], No. 37954/59. Classes 64(1) and 123(2) Relates to boilers or water heaters of the vertical type and of the kind comprising a water or water and steam chamber in the form of a shell the upper part 2 of which is approximately circular in plan and usually of dome shaped or ellipsoidal form and has immediately below it a part which may be of reduced cross-sectional area on horizontal planes and has extending horizontally through it between an inlet flue chamber 9 and an outlet flue chamber 10, a series of tubes 6, the outlet flue chamber communicating with a chimney 11 while the inlet flue chamber communicates at its lower end with a flue opening 12 in a furnace chamber 13 situated adjacent to the lower end of the boiler. According to the invention the furnace chamber 13 is of approximately spherical or spheroidal form over more than a hemisphere, and is provided with a lateral burner opening 18 while the water space of the boiler extends around and below the furnace chamber.
