Abstract
894,357. Steam boilers. STRUTHERS WELLS CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1958 [March 19, 1958], No. 29520/58. Class 123(2) A return-tube boiler of the wet-back type comprises a water chamber 14 in a cylindrical shell 2 which accommodates a cylindrical fire box 28 having communication with a rear end flue chamber 22 connected by fire tubes 30 extending through the chamber 14 by the side of the fire-box 28 to a reversing chamber 36 formed by a cap structure 34 secured to a front wall 4 of the shell 2, fire tubes 32 above the fire box 28 connecting the reversing chamber 36 with an upper rear end flue chamber 38 having an exhaust stack 42. The rear flue chamber 38 consists of a transverse wall 8 which is sealed to the inner surface of the shell and has its lower part curved rearwardly and downwardly at 10 to provide a lower rear wall portion 12 of the shell, and the upper portion of the shell end wall consists of a co-planar plate 40 which closes the rear end of the flue chamber 38. The flue chamber 22 comprises a part circular plate 16 which is coplanar with the plate 8 and is spaced from the lower edge of the latter and from the shell 2. A cap which comprises a semi-cylindrical portion 18 and a curved portion 20, which extends generally parallel to the curved portion 10 of the plate 8, is secured to the edge of the plate 16. A peripheral passageway 44, in communication with the water chamber 14, surrounds the flue chamber 22 which has an access opening defined by a tubular fitting 24 with a cap 26.
