In a hot-water boiler comprising an insulated cylindrical outer casing (not shown), within which is coaxially mounted a unit having a lower fire-box 14 from which fire tubes 15 extend upwardly through a water chamber to an upper smoke box 16 with a flue outlet 17, condensation of corrosive combustion products within the fire tubes during starting is minimized by providing a baffle 18 around the tubes to restrict the water circulation. The lower edge of the baffle is welded to the rim of the fire-box 14 and four holes 19 are provided near this edge to allow entry of water. The upper edge of the baffle extends beyond the lower rim of the smokebox and is spaced therefrom to provide an outlet for the circulating water. The easing 13 of the water chamber has water inlet and outlet connections 20, 21. The fire tubes may be provided internallywith helical baffles.
