A hot water boiler, fired by liquid or gaseous fuels, comprises two roughly concentric intercommunicating water jackets 2, 3 arranged so that the combustion gases from a combustion chamber 1 pass through an aperture 5 in the bottom of the inner water jacket 2 and then rise in the flue passage 4 between the water jackets being deflected by a substantially horizontal horseshoe shaped baffle 11, and passing out through an exhaust gas pipe 10. A tank 19 is arranged above the boiler and is heated by hot water rising up a vertical pipe 21 from the inner water jacket 2, passing between the walls of a water jacket 20 surrounding tank 19, and returning through pipe 22 to the outer water jacket 3 which is in communication with the inner water jacket 2 at the forward end 6. Pipe 16 delivers hot water from jacket 3 to a heating system, the used water returning to the outer jacket through a return flow pipe 17. A pipe 23 supplies fresh water to tank 19 and hot water for domestic use is taken from tank 19 through pipe 24. Pipe 27 leads to an expansion tank (not shown). Thermometer connections 26, 28 are provided. To prevent the combustion gases becoming too cold when the boiler is run at a small load, closable throughflow apertures (not shown) may be provided in the rear end 11b of the baffle 11 to short circuit the path of said gases. Access for cleaning the flue 4 is had through a door 18 and the tank 19 has a covered access opening 25.
