Abstract

885,964. Electric igniters. HOTCHKISSBRANDT. April 28, 1960 [May 4, 1959], No. 14891/60. Class 9(1). A high tension electric igniter is provided comprising a metal casing 1 within which an electrode 4 is centred by an insulating ring 3, which may be of plastic or ceramic material. Covering the ring 3 and electrode 4 is a thin disc 5 having a small aperture 6, the disc being of dielectric material, e.g. paper. On the disc is a layer of explosive 7 rendered conducting by the admixture of material such as graphite or powdered metal. The explosive may be lead nitride or trinitro-resorcinate or a mixture thereof and the metal may be powdered aluminium or copper. Non-conductive explosive such as lead nitride forms a layer 8 above the layer 7 and above layer 8 is a secondary charge 9, which may be tetryl, penthrite, hexogen or tolite.
