Abstract
891,972. Blasting fuzes. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 2, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 7414/60. Class 9(1). An electric blasting cap is provided with a fuzehead comprising a dielectric sheet 20 having on one side spaced electrodes 16, 16<SP>1</SP> connected by a wire 9 bridging a gap 17 in the sheet. Closing the metal shell 1 of the cap is a resilient plug 8 formed in two halves between which the sheet 20 is so sandwiched that the bridgecarrying portion is exposed and dips into an igniter composition 5 housed in a cup 4 of polyethylene or like material. This arrangement is said to minimise danger due to 'arcing'. A sleeve 14 filled with a delay mixture may be placed between the fuzehead and a primer charge 3 overlying a base charge 2. The fuzehead may be formed by a "printed circuit" technique, the electrodes being a copper or other metal coating applied by vapour deposition on to a support of plastic material such as polyethylene terephthalate or on to glass or mica, surplus metal being subsequently removed by chemical or mechanical means before soldering the wire 9 in position. The delay charge may be an 85/15 barium oxide-selenium or a 2/98 boron/red lead mixture, which latter mixture may also be used as the igniter material 5. The primer 3 may be lead azide and PETN may be used as the base charge. The plug sections have parallel grooves to receive leg wires attached to the electrodes.
