Abstract
960,186. Electric initiators. BENDIX CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1962 [Oct. 19, 1961], No. 36289/62. Heading F3A. An explosive initiator particularly adapted for use in missiles, comprises electrodes 12, 26 separated from one another by a thin frangible sheet 27 and a gas-filled space 16 which forms part of a spark gap, the electrode 26 having an aperture 32 which contains explosive material 38. The electrode 12 and a pin 21, connected to electrode 26, have an air-tight fit within bores 14, 16 and 22 of a ceramic or plastics insulating plug 11, and one end of an insulator 19 is enclosed by a cup-shaped portion 15 of electrode 12 and the other end abuts the sheet 27 adjacent aperture 32. The sheet 27, which may be of aluminium or copper foil and has a thickness between 0.0005 and 0.005 inch, is ruptured over the area abutting insulator 19 when gas in cavity 16 is heated by spark discharge therethrough. After rupture, explosive 38, 39 is spark-ignited and a main charge 40 is thereby detonated. Insulator 19 may be of ceramics, but is preferably of alumina or quartz coated with a semi-conducting material or is alternatively made entirely of semi-conducting material. A sheath 36 may be of copper or brass.
