Abstract

1,072,784. Gas generators. HI-SHEAR CORPORATION. May 29, 1964, No. 22260/64. Heading F3A. An electrically actuated squib comprises a hollow body (10) open at two places with an insulating plug (20) at one opening carrying electrical conductors (25-27) leading to bridgewires (34, 35) positioned in a first charge (48) which is held in a tapered ring (42) secured to the body and separated from a second charge (60) by an insulating barrier (51), there being a flash barrier (63) adjacent the second charge on the side opposite to the first charge, and the second opening being hermetically sealed by a rupturable closure plate (65) welded to the body. The body has threads (12) for mounting the squib and a recess (13) for receiving a plug to supply current to the conductors which are set in the ceramic plug (20) by means of glass beads (32) and spot-welded to the bridgewires (34, 35) in contact with the first charge (48) which consists of an initiator portion (49) and a sustainer portion (50) compressed into the tapered retainer ring (42) joined to the body (10) and plug (20) by cement (19). The laminated insulating barrier (51) is cemented to the retainer ring (42) and contacts the second charge (60) comprising a tightly compressed portion (61) and a less compacted portion (62), the charge being enclosed by a flash barrier (63) identical with the barrier (51). A resilient ring (64) is placed on the flash barrier (63) and held by the closure plate (65) which is spot-welded to a lip (67) in a counter bore (66) in the body. A washer (69) is positioned next to the closure plate (65) and the end of the body is formed into a crimp (71). The closure plate (65) has a cruciform shaped area (68) of reduced thickness which ruptures after ignition. Closure of the opening with the conductors is accomplished by use of a resin (72). The plug (20) may be of 94-99À5% pure alumina and the conductors gold plated.
