Abstract
729,372. Signalling cartridges. SCHERMULY PISTOL ROCKET APPARATUS, Ltd. March 29, 1954 [April 10, 1953], No. 9748/53. Class 9(2). An electrically ignited cartridge which may contain a flare composition, one or more parachute flares, or smoke or illuminating compositions, comprises a metal case 1 surrounding a metal casing 3 with a closure 4 at the forward end. A metal plug 5 extends into the open end of the casing, the casing being in electrical contact with the plug and the outer case 1. Housed in the plug is an electric igniter 7 embedded in a charge 8 which is in communication with the interior of the casing through a flash passage 9. An insulating cap 10 covering the end of the plug bears against a contact plate 11 connected to a lead 12 from the igniter, the other lead 13 being passed through an opening 14 and connected to the plug by a screw 15. A screw 16 mounted in an insulating block 17 in the base 2 carries the contact 11. Closing the mouth of the cartridge is a sealing member 18 which also holds the casing 3 in position prior to ignition of the charge 8. To discharge the cartridge a low voltage is applied between the screw 16 and the case 1. This actuates the igniter and the charge 8 is ignited, the casing 3 being ejected thereby. The composition within the casing 3 may be ignited directly by flash from the charge 8 or by a delay fuze housed in the passage 9.
