Abstract
1,031,357. Electric detonators. PHYSICAL SCIENCES CORPORATION. March 24, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 12471/64. Heading F3A. An electrically actuated detonator has a spark gap to prevent ignition below a certain minimum applied voltage and two spark-gap electrodes which are mounted by means of fired ceramic material. A stainless steel housing 10 has a cavity 15 filled with a charge 16 and a second cavity 18 for connection to a firing circuit while two bores 22 extend between the cavities and carry terminal pins 24, 25 fused to ceramic sleeves 26 and a ceramic layer 28 and an O-ring 30 make the electrical connection fluid tight; the cavity 15 being sealed by a gasket 32 and a metal disc 34 welded to the housing 1. The inner ends of pins 24, 25 extend through a ceramic layer 46 and have shoulders 48 and end sockets 50, 52 which receive the ends of two shorter terminal pins 35, 36 connected to a bridge wire 44, sealing of the shorter pins 35, 36 being by a ceramic insert 40 fused to a stainless steel wall 42 cemented to the housing 10. The short pin 36 is offset to aid connection with the socket 52 while the short pin 35 has a ceramic coating with a circumferential gap 54 which divides the coating into two axially spaced sleeves 55a, 55b and forms the spark gap between the exposed parts of the terminals 24, 35 which form electrodes. The ceramic insert 40 has a cavity 45 to provide a shaped charge effect.
