Abstract

635,716. Blasting-devices. ATLAS POWDER CO. April 30, 1947, No. 11569. Convention date, May 10, 1946. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A neoprene plug 11, .255 inch in diameter, and leg wires 31, 33 of an initiating device for a detonator are assembled by placing the plug on hollow needles 17, 19 so that the points of the needles enter bores 13, 15, diameter .022 inch, and forcing the plug down until it reaches a support 25 from which pins 27, 29 extend into the needles. The support is then removed and leg wires 31, 33 having insulation 35, 37, inserted into the needles. The needles having indented gripping portions 39, 41 are then pulled out of the plug to allow it to contract on to the leg wires. A match-head 55, Fig. 5, is soldered to the leg wires and the whole assembly inserted in a metal shell containing a base charge 49, primary charge 51 and flash charge 53. The shell 43 is then crimped to the plug 11. The needles have external and internal diameters of .072 inch and 0.054 inch, respectively. The leg wires are .025 inch in diameter and when covered by insulation are .049 inch in diameter. Alternative materials for the plug and insulation are given. The plug assembly is stated to be water-proof under 250 lbs. per sq. inch water pressure for 16 hours at 125‹ F., and under 50 lbs. per sq. inch for 4 hours at 32‹ F. The wires may be dipped in sealing material before insertion in the plugs to seal the joint between the insulation and the wire. The plug material may be extruded and cut to the desired length after the needles have been partially inserted.
