Abstract

1,019,950. Electric blasting detonators. SOC. DE PROSPECTION ELECTRIQUE SCHLUMBERGER. Oct. 19, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 39672/62. Heading F3A. An electric detonator, from which the usual primary charge is omitted as in Specification 884,041, comprises a steel tube 10 housing a secondary explosive, e.g. penthrite, and having an internal diameter of at least 8 mm. for a length of at least 37 mm., the explosive being initiated by an igniter housed in the detonator and comprising a resistance wire in contact with an inflammable powder. The tube is of reduced external diameter at each end, one end being closed by a metal diaphragm 14 and engaged in a metal adapter 24 while the other end is fitted with a ferrule 46 and closed by a conical member 18. The ferrule 46 has a transverse bore receiving a quick-match 52, which is secured by a screw 48. The adapter 24 has an axial passage in which is inserted a needle-shaped igniter 32 extending through the diaphragm 14 into the explosive 42. The igniter is filled with black powder in which is embedded a resistance wire 34. One end of the wire is connected to a conductor 36 passing through an insulating plug 28 and the other end of the wire 34 is connected to the conductive wall of the needle and thence through diaphragm 14 and adapter 24 to a conductor 37 for the return circuit. In a modification both conductors are passed through an insulating plug and through glass beads before entering an incendiary charge, which when ignited by passage of a current through the bridge-wire connecting the conductors fires the secondary explosive. In this case the quick match is held to the detonator by an elastic sleeve fitted over an extension of the steel tube. The explosive may be hexogen or tetryl and the tube 10 is 3 mm. thick. The detonator is said to be insensitive to static charges, spurious currents and hot gases under pressure. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 884,041.
