Abstract

862,987. Ammunition primers. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S. A. Oct. 28, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 34514/58. Class 9(1). An electric primer for explosive or propellent charges comprises two metal electrodes 2, 3 connected to a condenser 1, an element 4 of semi-conductive material being placed between the electrodes adjacent priming 5, so that on closing a key in the condenser circuit a spark is produced in the element 4 which ignites the charge 5. The semi-conductive material is a solid of crystalline structure which is non-conducting near 0‹K but at higher temperatures has an electronic conductivity or acquires such conductivity when its structure is disturbed or can be made conductive by external influences. The element 4 may be a metalloid or an anhydride of a metalloid having a relatively low melting point and a boiling point such that it evaporates under vacuum. Examples given include selenium, germanium, vanadium pentoxide, silicon monoxide, cerium bioxide, cadmium sulphide, and uranium bioxide. The element 4 is preferably in the form of a thin layer, e.g. one micron thick, deposited on an insulator 6 of synthetic resin or ceramic material inserted in electrode 3 and surrounding electrode 2. A conductive layer 7, which may be a metal such as indium, covers the layer 4 and contacts the electrode 3 along its periphery. A conductive ring 8 is forced into the sleeve 3 against the layer 7 and houses the priming 5. Instead of the layer 7, a thin conducting wire may extend radially over film 4 from the electrode 2 to the electrode 3.
