Abstract

885,883. Exhaust silencers. WAGNERHOCHDRUCK - DAMPFTURBINEN G.m.b.H. Sept. 29, 1958 [Sept. 28, 1957], No. 31086/58. Class- 7(2). [Also in Group XIII] In a heat exchanger utilizing the waste heat of engine or other exhaust gases passing through a plurality of tubes 4, and in which at least one swirl baffle is positioned within each tube adjacent the gas inlet end thereof, the distance between a baffle and the end of its associated tube or the angle formed between the baffle and the longitudinal axis of the tube varies from one tube to the next, to provide sound damping of the exhaust gas. The baffles may, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, comprise inclined plates 8 positioned at varying distances a, b, c from the gas inlet ends of the tubes. Each baffle may alternatively comprise an inclined indentation in the tube wall or as shown in Fig. 7, a helically twisted strip 28 carried in a sleeve 9 having a flared inlet 10, the sleeve being inserted in the gas entry end of the tube and having a slit 11 therein to enable the sleeve to be gripped by the tube.
