Abstract

884,982. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 14, 1958 [April 17, 1957], No. 12501/57. Class 103 (1). A brake comprises a rotatable member 6 and an applying member 4 having limited angular movement in the direction of rotation of member 6, a bifurcated member 32 angularly movable with member 4, and a rocking lever 36 pivoted at 35 to member 32 so that lever 36 rotates in the same direction irrespective of the direction of rotation of member 4, the lever being associated with pedal 2 via means 42, 43, 47 to increase the effort applied by the pedal. Extensions 13 on one side of member 4 are secured to an annular boss 14 having a flange 19 loosely held between flanges 15 and 29 on the fixed axle housing 16, a ring 18 also being held between flanges 15 and 29, the flange 19 having recesses 22 loosely housing bosses 21 on ring 18, Fig. 3, by which the ring is secured to flange 15. The boss 14 has a slot 30 and a lip 31, an extension 34 of an arcuate plate 32 secured to ring 18 extends into slot 30 and carries pivot pin 35, the lever 36 having two recesses 37, 38 angularly disposed to each other and housing semi-circular actuators 39, 39a whose flat sides bear against opposite faces of the slot 30. On braking the movement of member 4 with the disc within the limits of slots 22, causes one side of slot 30 to engage actuator 39, or 39a to rotate lever 36 anti-clockwise, the lever 36 pulling a cable 42 to assist the pedal 2 in a stronger actuation of the master cylinder 1, the slots 22 being of such length that projection 21 on ring 18 never " bottom " even under the fiercest braking. The master cylinder may operate other wheel brakes 57 and the described brake may be a wheel brake or in the transmission of a vehicle. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown, one of the housing extensions 13 carries a cam member which engages a recess in a fixed member, the lever 36 being secured to the cam which is rotated counter clockwise by movement of the housing on initial braking, the lever 36 rotating in a plane parallel to the disc. Specification 688,382 is referred to.
