Abstract
884,294. Steam turbine plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 21010/57. Class 110 (3). A steam turbine having a dump valve provided between the control valve and the cylinder directly controlled by it, a reheater between the cylinder and the following cylinder of lower pressure and an interceptor valve between the reheater and lower pressure cylinder, has the control of the dump valve co-ordinated with that of the control and interceptor valves so that the dump valve is opened when these valves are closed. High-pressure steam is supplied through pipes P, stop valves S and throttle valves T to the high-pressure turbine cylinder H. The cylinder H discharges through a reheater R to an intermediate pressure cylinder I which exhausts through a divided flow low pressure cylinder L. Interceptor valves N and emergency interceptor valves E are located between the reheater R and the intermediate pressure cylinder I. A dump valve V is arranged in a branch D leading off the pipes P between the throttle valves T and high-pressure cylinder H. Upon a sudden increase of speed, the throttle valves T and interceptor valves N are closed and the dump valve V opened. At a predetermined pressure the valve V is arranged to reseat and so prevent air entering the cylinder H. When the interceptor valves N are closed the flow of steam through the cylinder H is reversed so that it acts as a braking torque on the rotor.
