Abstract
1281918 Steam turbines BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 13 Oct 1969 [14 Oct 1968] 50082/69 Heading FIT A steam turbine plant having in series a steam generator 1, high-pressure turbine 3, water separator or other container 5 and low-pressure turbine 6 has a steam control valve 8 and a safety shut-off valve 9 upstream of the H.P. turbine 3 and corresponding valves 10, 11 downstream thereof. The valves 8, 10 are controlled by the turbine speed governor 15 which varies the leakoff at 16 of oil from the valve operating system 17. Should the turbines exceed a safe speed, a monitor 19 opens an outlet 20 in the oil system 21 of safety valves 9, 11 so that the latter move to a fully closed position to shut-off the steam flow. If a fault occurs in any of the valve servomotors resulting in a steam pressure build up within separator 5 then pressure limiters 23, 25 open further outlets 24, 26 from the oil systems 17, 21 to cause valves 8 to 11 to close. Limiter 25 may operate at a slightly higher pressure than limiter 23. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown), the water separator 5 includes a superheater heated by H. P. steam supplied from the generator 1 through a pipe (12). The latter includes safety shut-off valves (13, 14) linked respectively to the oil systems 17, 21 so as to operate with the valves 8 to 11. In a further modification the interstage valves 10, 11 are not linked to the valves 8, 9. In further arrangements the valves can be controlled by pneumatic or electrical systems rather than oil.
