Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A spill valve 10 in a branch 9 of a line 2 connecting a steam generator 1 to a steam turbine 3, 4 is operated by a servopiston 12 in dependence on the pressure upstream of the valve and is moved to fully open position when the pressure exceeds a predetermined valve and causes a bypass valve 26 to inter-connect the opposite sides of the piston. In the illustrated embodiment, three by-pass valves 26, 26<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>11</SP> are provided to increase reliability and each valve is controlled by an electromagnet energized by a pressure-sensitive switch 21, 21<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>11</SP> which may also be arranged to energize one of three switches 40, 40<SP>1</SP>, 40<SP>11</SP> controlling an electromagnetically actuated valve 35. This valve, which may also be operated by an oilpressure failure in the control system, isolates the servopiston 12 from a pilot valve 17 controlled by a regulator 16 having integral action, responsive to steam pressure in the line 2 and supplied with a set valve from a second regulator 43 which adjusts the firing of the steam generator in accordance with the load. The second regulator may also be used to vary the pressure at which the switch controlling the by-pass valve opens. The load 3, 4 consists of high and low-pressure turbines connected by a reheater 5 and provided with speed-responsive valves 7, 8 and a safety valve 6. In a simplified arrangement, the regulator 43 and the valve 35 are omitted and only one bypass valve is provided.
