In an electric iron having a reservoir G in a top plate A to which steam from an external source is supplied by a flexible tube, and wherein the supply of steam to apertures b<SP>2</SP> in the sole plate B is controlled by a manuallyoperated valve H, the outlet g<SP>1</SP> from the steam reservoir G is connected through the control valve H to a passage h in the rear of the top plate, the passage h communicating with a passage b in the sole plate leading to one or more steam-distributing grooves or channels bl. The steam reservoir is approximately U-shaped, steam being supplied to the longer leg of the U through a pipe F. The valve H is opened against the action of a spring M by a lever K pivoted at K<SP>1</SP>.
