Abstract

979, 230. Steam irons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 17,1963 [Oct. 9, 1962], No. 36634/63. Heading D1A. A pressing iron has a soleplate 1 with a heater 5 and a boiler 8 associated with a water reservoir 15 characterized in that the initial flow rate of the water into the boiler is greater than the rate of outflow of steam from the boiler, the steam being directed into the reservoir and from there to the fabric. Steam passes from the boiler 8, through a passage 26 and opening 27 into the upper part of reservoir 15 where it is "wetted", from there it passes through the opening 31 and when the pressure is sufficient opens the valve 33 against a spring 35 and passes through channels 10 and 11 to the fabric. Water passes from the reservoir to the boiler through an aperture 23, which aperture may be closed when desired by a valve stem 24 operable by means of a button 25. A plate 28 with horizontal portion 29 against which the valve spring acts is apertured to allow passage of water from one part of the reservoir to another. The iron has a temperature control (not shown) operated by a lever 7. The iron may also have a spray mechanism operated manually by a button 52.
