Abstract

951,532. Steam irons. LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. Oct. 31,1960, No. 37313/60. Heading D1A. An electric steam iron has a temperature responsive element arranged to prevent the supply of water to an evaporation chamber unless the temperature of the chamber is sufficient to vaporize the water. As shown, a valve 7 between a reservoir and the evaporation chamber (not shown) is closed by means of a cap 19 under the influence of a spring 14 acting through a lever 12 pivoted at 15. Opening of the valve is effected by a bimetal element 9 acting on the lever 12. Adjustment of the opening temperature can be effected by means of a screw 16 which may be coupled to a thermal control for the sole plate temperature. Automatic closing of the valve when the iron is upended is ensured by mounting the valve cap 19 on a bell crank lever 20 pivoted at 21 and carrying a weight 24. A fluid expansion element may be used in place of the bimetal element. Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) illustrate simplified examples.
