Abstract

701,938. Thermal switches. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. July 2, 1951 [Oct. 28, 1950], No. 15657/51. Class 38(5) [Also in Group VIII] A thermal switch for an electric steam iron (see Group VIII) comprises contacts 79, 80 carried by resilient arms 81, 91 respectively, the arms 81, 91 with interposed insulating members being supported in a stack 78 carried by an extension 75a of a frame member 75 secured to the sole plate of the iron by screws 76. These screws also clamp a bimetallic element 77 carrying an insulator 78<SP>1</SP> adapted to bear on an extension 83 of arm 81. The extension 83 preferably comprises a bimetallic compensating thermostat. Contact arm 91 is insulatingly connected to an arm 90 and its position can be adjusted by means of a member 96 provided with rack teeth 96a engaged by a gear (not shown) rotatable with a control knot 98 as described in Specification 644,787. Accurate initial adjustment can be effected by means of a screw 100 threaded in an extension 75b of the frame 75. Since the thermostat assembly is supported at the forward end only by the screws 76 it can be biased downwardly at the rear end by means of the screw 100 which engages the cover 62 of the iron. A lock nut 101 maintains the screw 100 in its set position.
