Abstract

968,874. Thermal switches. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Feb. 7, 1961 [May 2,1960], No. 4605/61. Heading H2B. [Also in Division D1] A thermostat in a steam iron comprises a bimetallic strip 134 which is clamped to a web 70 of an electrically heated sole-plate 22 and actuates a non-metallic stud 136 engaging with an ambient temperature compensating bimetallic strip 164 attached to a flexible metallic strip 144 carrying a contact 138. The position of the associated stationary contact 140 is adjustable by a control lever assembly 224 coupled to a pinion 220 by a rotatable shaft 222, the pinion meshing with a rack 166b cut in a slidable rod 166 having an inclined cam surface 166a which engages with a non-metallic cam follower 170 attached to one side of an arm 146 carrying the contact 140 and coupled to an electrically insulating column 142 by a blade spring 146a. The column 142 also supports the strip 144 and conductors 150, 152 connected to the heating element 24 and supply cable 160 (Fig. 12), respectively. The column is mounted on a frame 130, the opposite end of which is attached to the web 70 by screws 132 and serves as a clamping member for the strip 134. A screw 172 held by a nut 174 provides a bearing surface for the end of the rod 166, and thereby serves as adjusting means for the cam surface 166a.
