Abstract

1,058,106. Thermal switches. CALOR APPAREILS ELECTRO - DOMESTIQUES. Aug. 4, 1964 [June 19, 1964],. No. 31229/64. Heading H2B. [Also in Division G1] A thermostat for a domestic iron utilizes the differences in expansion between the base plate 1 of the iron and a reference member 2 of a material with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, e.g. " Invar " (Trade Mark), to open and close switch contacts 9, 10 in the heater circuit of the iron. At one end the reference member 2 engages a cranked member 17 by means of a suitable pin 16 secured thereto. The member 17 is pivoted in a fixed plate 19 and also carries a small bimetallic strip 22 bearing on a flanged adjustment nut 23. The position of the nut 23 controls the temperature at which the thermostat operates and the bimetallic strip 22 compensates for any minor expansion of the member 2. At its other end the member 2 engages by means of a nut 41, a lever 3 fulcrumed on a pivot 4 and carrying an electrically insulating member 5 which actuates a flexible strip 8 on which the movable contact 9<SP>1</SP> is mounted. The fixed contact 10 is carried by a strip 28 and its position is adjustable by means of a screw 29 to control the sensitivity of the thermostat. A spring 7 serves to make the switch snap-acting. The pivot 4 for the layer 3 is carried by a fixed member 12 and a return spring 11 is provided acting between the member 12 and lever 3 to take up any play in the connections between the reference member 2 and the lever 3 and member 17.
