979,180. Thermal switches; switches partly electromagnetic. LANDIS & GYR A.G. Sept. 4, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961; July 18, 1962], No. 33836/62. Heading H2B. A bimetal relay includes one or more bimetal contact devices thermally controlled by a control element which is mounted for movement relatively to the contact devices and actuated by a measuring element. One form of control element is a heated plate 10 movable between two connected contact-carrying bimetal strips 3, 4 by a flat coil 16 mounted for movement in the direction of the arrows between two permanent magnets 17, 18, the arrangement 16/17/18 with supply conductors 19, 20, comprising the measuring element 15. Movement of plate 10 by coil 16 causes the bimetal system 3/5/4 to deviate from its central position to close contacts 1, 6, or 2, 7, e.g. to start up a servomotor 9 in one or other direction. Plate 10 may be a non-heated plate acting as a heat sink between two connected heated bimetals (Fig. 2 not shown), or may be a heat conducting block with a heating coil fixed to the shaft of a rotor coil measuring mechanism for movement between bimetal contact devices (Fig. 3, not shown). Bimetals 3, 4 are connected together to compensate for ambient temperature variation.
