Abstract

904,044. Thermal switches. THOMPSON & CO. (SUNBURY) Ltd., R. E., and MACANDREW, J. F. April 14, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 14256/60. Class 38 (5). A switch assembly comprises an insulating base having a thermostatic switch on one side and a safety switch on the other side, the former having a thermal element exposed to air temperature, and the safety switch having a thermal trip device in contact with a probe transmitting heat thereto so as to operate the safety switch if the transmitted heat becomes excessive. The assembly is shown controlling an electrically heated fluid-filled radiator, and the thermostatic switch comprises a snap-action spring 5, which may be similar to that of Specification 751,483, acted upon by pair of bimetals 7, 8 floatingly mounted by a spring 10 and adjustable by a knob 12. The spring controls contacts 4, 39 in series with normallyclosed contacts 23, 24. The latter may be separated by an insulating piece 26 on a rod 25 which is normally held in the Fig. 2 position by a ratchet-wheel 19 held by solder which melts when the fluid temperature, as detected by a probe 22, reaches an excessive value. This switch may be re-set by a button 31. An indicator lamp 33 is connected across the supply terminals.
