The relative durations of open and closed conditions of a cyclic switch for controlling input of energy to electrical appliances are varied by adjustment of the position of an otherwise-stationary switch unit with respect to a continuously running cam which acts on a switch-operating lever made of bimetal to compensate for changes in ambient temperature. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, a micro-switch 6 is pivoted at 5 on a plate 1 and its bimetal operating arm 7 is urged by a spring 9 into contact with a cam 3 driven by motor 2. Spring 9 also presses switch 6 against a screw 10 which is threaded in a bush 11 on plate 1 and is adjustable by a knob 12 with a pointer (not shown) moving over a scale 13. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), a motor 17 drives cam 18 to operate bimetal arm 27 of micro-switch 26 which is mounted on a plate 19 pivoted to a base-plate 16 at 20 and guided by pins 22 in slots 21. A spring 25 urges plate 19 counterclockwise with respect to plate 16 to engage a cam 23 thereon. Cam 23 is adjustable by spindle 24 to move plate 19, and hence switch 26, to vary the on/off ratio of the switch operation.
