Abstract

1,064,828. Electric irons. MORPHYRICHARDS Ltd. Oct. 18, 1965 [Nov. 7, 1964], No. 45496/64. Heading D1A. An electric iron or the like having a handle movable between two positions in one of which it is locked in position and the circuit of the appliance is connected to the input terminals, the circuit being otherwise disconnected. A resilient lever 6 with an actuating knob 7 is coupled to a sleeve 8 rotatably mounted on a spindle 9 coupled to the moving contact of a switch 5. Handle 2 is pivoted to the sole plate 1 and has a recess 11 which accommodates a flange 10, extending round 180 degrees of the circumference of sleeve 8, when the handle is in its operative position and prevents it from moving to its inoperative position. Lever 6 is then held in position by one of the grooves (12) or (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), according to whether the supply voltage is high or low. Spindle 9 is coupled to or integral with a spindle 14 rotatable relative to a fixed support (15) and carrying a rotatable support (16) biassed towards support (15) by a compression spring (18). Support (16) has an annular projection carrying a conducting contact (22) over 135 degrees of its extent. Fixed contacts (23), (24), (25) are carried on resilient arms (26) biassing them towards contact (22). The iron element comprises two resistances connected in series for the high voltage supply, one only being used for the low voltage supply. The end of one resistance is coupled to an input lead, the other end of this resistance and one end of the other resistance is connected to contact (23), the other end of this other resistance is connected to contact (25) and contact (24) is connected to the other input lead.
