A steam iron of the flash type has a steam generating chamber 28 disposed in a sole plate 10, the sole plate having passage means extending from the rear portion of the chamber 28 and communicating with the bottom pressing surface of the sole plate, electric heating means (not shown) having a portion thereof disposed adjacent the side walls of the chamber 28, means for admitting water to the steam generating chamber and a trap or barrier 54 U-shaped in cross section disposed in the chamber rearwardly of the water admitting means, the trap or barrier being in spaced relation to the side walls and having wall means extending upwardly from the bottom surface of the chamber, the arrangement being such that the trap or barrier 54 serves to retain therein any unvaporized water thus preventing the flow of any water from the chamber to the passage means. The bottom surface of the chamber 28 slopes downwardly towards the trap or barrier 54 so as to direct unvaporized water towards the trap or barrier. The steam generating chamber is connected to ports 35 in the sole plate 10 through passages provided by a number of depending fins 43, 44, 45 on a cover plate 38 screwed to the sole plate 10. The cover plate 38 also has a peripheral flange 42 and a central flat portion 40 with an opening through which water is supplied to the chamber 28 under the control of a valve (not shown) from a reservoir surmounting the cover plate. An adjustable thermostat (not shown) is mounted adjacent a portion 52 so as to be responsive primarily to the temperature of the central portion of the sole plate 10. The heating element is generally U- shaped in plan and is provided with terminal portions 48.
