Abstract
939,659. Refrigerating. ATLAS A. S. Aug. 17, 1960 [Aug. 17, 1959], No. 28470/60. Class 29. In a compression system having a flooded evaporator 1 to which liquid refrigerant is fed at the lowest point from pipe 5 through regulating valve 6, the valve is controlled in dependence on the amount of liquid refrigerant which passes through downcomer 2 in unit time from the separator 3 to the lowest point of the evaporator. As shown in Fig. 2, an open-topped chamber 11 extends into the path of the liquid passing down pipe 2 and has a bottom orifice 12. Within the chamber is an electricallyheated thermal bulb 13 connected by tube 8 to the valve 6. If the load on the evaporator falls, less refrigerant is evaporated and hence more liquid falls into the chamber 11 where it builds up. When it contacts bulb 13, it cools the bulb and valve 6 is moved to closed position to reduce the refrigerant supply. A grid 16 closes the top of the chamber and a shield 15 prevents falling liquid from impinging directly on bulb 13. The heater of bulb 13 may be controlled in accordance with the load on the system.
