Abstract

1,137,650. Refrigerating. DANFOSS A/S. 17 Aug., 1966 [28 Aug., 1965], No. 36824/66. Heading F4H. A heated oil separator 5 in a compressioncondensation refrigeration system has a drain valve 9 operated by a temperature senser 16 which, when submerged in oil at a temperature above the refrigerant boiling point, opens the valve, and when the oil level has fallen to a level h 2 closes the valve. Closure is effected since when the oil is at the level h 2 , heat is conducted away from the senser 16 through its connection 17 with the valve 9 at a greater rate than heat can be conducted to it through the refrigerant vapour in the separator. The oil may be heated by passage of compressed refrigerant through pipes 15 or a space 11 prior to its entry to the separator proper, or electrical heaters may be employed. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the senser is horizontally elongated and is located close to the drain from the separator. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the drain valve is located in the bottom wall of the separator and is operated directly by a senser located within a perforated shield in the separator.
