Abstract

1,197,295. Refrigerating. CARRIER CORP. 1 Aug., 1967 [2 Sept., 1966]. No. 35343/67. Heading F4H. In a compression-condensation refrigeration system liquid refrigerant passes from a subcooler 13 to the evaporator 5 via a throttle valve 41 which is controlled by a float 34 in a control chamber 31 connected by a pipe 52 to the condenser 3 and by a smaller diameter drain pipe 54 to the evaporator. The condenser end of the pipe 52 is located at a level above the bottom of the condenser and the arrangement of the float and valve is such as to maintain liquid refrigerant at that level and thereby maintain a fully flooded subcooler. The subcooler passes refrigerant to the valve 41 through a pipe 47 and is connected by a pipe 56 to the control chamber. During normal operation a valve 57 in the pipe 56 is closed whereas valves 53 and 55 in the control chamber connections to the condenser and evaporator are open. However during low load conditions valve 55 is closed and valve 57 opened to flood the control chamber and thereby fully open the valve 41 so that liquid refriferant is drained from the condenser to the evaporator and high pressure gas can pass to the evaporator to agitate the liquid therein. At start-up, valves 53 and 57 may be closed and valve 55 opened so that the valve 41 closes to allow a, rapid build-up of high side pressure.
