In an electric hand iron including a valve 13 having manually operable control means 23 for controlling the supply of water from a reservoir 12 to a boiler 10<1>, and a sole plate 10 whose temperature is controlled by an adjustable thermostat 31<1> having a manual control member 32, the member 32 has a number of settings for dry ironing and a single setting for steam ironing, and interlocking means between the valve control means 23 and the temperature control member 32 is arranged to prevent opening of the valve 13 except when the member 32 is at the proper setting for steam ironing, and to prevent movement of the temperature control member 32 away from its steam ironing setting when the valve is open. The member 32 comprises a rotatable control dial having a recess 33 into which a latch 34 is arranged to enter when the dial 32 is set to its steam ironing position. The latch 34 is moved to its locking position against the action of a spring 35, by means of a link 39 having a cam surface 38 co-operating with the left-hand end of the latch 34. The link 39 is pivoted at 40 to the valve actuator 23 which is itself pivoted at 24 to a bracket 25 secured to the top of a reservoir filling tube 14. The actuator 23 has a pin and slot connection 26 with a valve stem 16 which is held in its lower or closed position by an over-centre spring 27, and in its upper or open position by a detent 30 on the bracket 25 co-operating with an opening 31 in the actuator 23.
